No science projects today… – DustandDoghair

Ah memories….

Back in the day, my dad occasionally would open our family fridge and announce to my busy mother (and all within earshot), “Pat, we have a science project in here!” Since neither my brothers nor I ever conducted refrigerated experiments at home, the announcement meant mom had overlooked a leftover of some sort …that had begun to acquire some manner of surface dots and other amoeba.

This month, Where Bloggers Live is peeking into the chilled closet of secrets…our refrigerators.

For me, this WBL post topic occurs one month too soon.

Our refrigerator is eeking along, just about two weeks shy of being replaced as part of “The Great Kitchen Renovation.” Although it sits dutifully in its current location (one that changes several times a week while my hero of a brother moves it around to perform the day’s electrical tasks and drywall installation), the fridge occasionally groans under the shadow of the replacement that was delivered more than two months ago.

That’s the new guy, sitting in the box to the left. I’m going to need a new spot to leave my broom.

Old Silver, which I’ll call her for clarification, is the second family refrigerator we purchased over, lo, these nearly 40 years. Pretty reliable workhorses, those two; although the first had significantly greater longevity than the second.

Nevertheless, Old Sil was joyfully selected for a particular feature: it boasted a pantry drawer that was large enough to accommodate a party-sized pizza box. And it did so with great frequency when the kiddos all lived home.

Samsung can call it a pantry drawer all day long. But to me it’s meant for a party pizza box.

As for the rest, her stainless steel exterior collected finger prints like a police station booking office, and I often lamented that we chose pizza storage over cleanliness.

Bahahaha, there was no lamenting! It was pizza storage for the win!

She was difficult to clean,,,there were no instructions for how to get tiny crumbs from between the double walled plastic drawers. I turned to Samsung with no avail. However, Mama Youtube had the answer via a video made by some saint who was able to separate the drawers without cracking off the little tabs that held the drawer together. I was not so fortunate, and many of the tabs had cracked off during my frequent attempts to retrieve the aforementioned crumbs.

Sil was a standard depth fridge, and because she nestled extra-snugly to the left of the no-longer-existent pantry closet, we were never able to open the right side fully.

Former kitchen

This time, now that it’s just Mr and I, we’re going to try living with a counter-depth refrigerator… I felt that this will be akin to going on a food storage diet…but we’ll see, as Mr had some surprises up his sleeves.

For her final days, Sil has been packed with salad, taco and sandwich ingredients; a splendid and ridiculous array of condiments; assorted juices; and coffee creamer (aka the MVP).. Mr eats a lot of salad…I’m more into “girl dinner” during these ongoing days of a deconstructed kitchen. THEREFORE…the current view of what’s in my refrigerator is thus:

Sil’s shiny exterior is currently adorned with hasty cleaning streaks, some likely undetected fingerprints, and–I only noticed a moments ago–a degrading splatter of drywall mud compound. Poor unappreciated Sil. That ain’t no way to treat a lady.

This is a peek inside my refrigerator. Also, someone needs to send that woman upstairs for hair and makeup.

Join me for a peek into several other refrigerators to see what’s in cold storage with:
